Design protection Patent applications Trademark registration Technical inventions, ingenious trademarks, original designs and artistic works have one thing in common: they are the product of the intellectual effort of their creator. Through intellectual property law, legislators enable creators to protect outstanding intellectual endeavours as intellectual property and thereby from misuse. Intellectual property law includes industrial property rights and copyright. Patent, trademark and design rights, and rights to the topographies of semi-conductor products, are industrial property rights. They are also called register rights, because the rights only exist if they have been entered in the corresponding register. Industrial property rights also encompass indication of source and in certain conditions competition law. Copyright protects works of literature and art and related services provided by the practicing artist, producer or broadcaster. The rights exist automatically as soon as work on the creation starts. No formalities or any form of registration are required.
